Description
An EC/TDS meter is a device used to measure electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration in an aqueous solution. These meters are common tools in various industries, such as agriculture, aquaculture, hydroponics, water quality, and more. They provide important information about the purity of water and its ability to conduct electricity, which can be useful for assessing water quality or monitoring the health of crops and hydroponic systems.
Electrical conductivity (EC) is measured in Siemens units per centimeter (S/cm) and is a measure of a solution’s ability to conduct electricity. Conductivity is related to the presence of ions dissolved in water, such as mineral salts, nutrients, and pollutants.
Total dissolved solids (TDS) are measured in parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter (mg/L) and represent the total concentration of all substances dissolved in an aqueous solution. This includes salts, minerals, heavy metals, nutrients, organic compounds, among others.
EC/TDS meters work using a probe or electrode that is immersed in the solution to be measured. The probe measures the electrical conductivity of the solution and, through pre-calibration, can convert that value into a TDS reading.
Some EC/TDS meters may have additional features, such as automatic temperature compensation, data storage capacity, multi-point calibration, on-screen backlight, automatic shut-off, etc. Specific features may vary depending on the meter model and manufacturer.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for properly calibrating, using, and maintaining the EC/TDS meter. Regular calibration is essential to ensure accurate and reliable measurements. In addition, proper probe maintenance, such as rinsing with distilled water and proper storage, helps to extend the life of the meter and maintain its accuracy.
The Milwaukee EC40 EC/TDS meter is an instrument used to measure electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids concentration (TDS) in a solution. These parameters are important indicators of water quality and are used in a variety of applications, including aquaculture, agriculture, swimming pools, hydroponics, and drinking water testing.
The EC40 is a portable, compact meter manufactured by Milwaukee Instruments, a well-known company in the measurement equipment industry. It is designed to provide fast and accurate measurements of EC and TDS in aqueous solutions. Some features and specifications of the EC40 meter may include:
Measurement Range: The EC40 can measure electrical conductivity in the range of 0.0 to 10.0 mS/cm and the total concentration of dissolved solids in the range of 0 to 5000 ppm (parts per million).
Automatic temperature compensation: The meter is equipped with a temperature sensor and makes automatic adjustments to compensate for changes in the temperature of the solution, helping to obtain more accurate measurements.
Easy calibration: The EC40 allows calibration at a single point. Some models may require specific calibration solutions provided by the manufacturer.
LCD Display: The meter has an easy-to-read LCD display that displays EC and TDS measurement values, as well as temperature.
Battery and automatic shut-off: The EC40 is powered by a long-lasting battery that allows for prolonged use. In addition, it features an auto-off function after a period of inactivity to conserve battery power.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use and maintenance of the EC40 meter. This may include rinsing the electrode with distilled water after each use, storing the meter in proper conditions, and calibrating it periodically according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

MAINTENANCE
EC/TS electrodes can develop a buildup of nutrients over time. To minimize buildup, always rinse the probe with running or deionized water after each use.
CONVERT EC TO TDS
The Milwaukee EC40 meter, like all conductivity meters, provides a measurement of electrically charged ions in a solution and is an absolute measure of conductivity.
EC is often converted to TDS in parts per million (ppm). The different scales include the 500 scale, the 650 scale, and the 700 scale. However, the EC40 has all direct EC/TDS/CF reads.
Your uS/cm reading can be roughly converted to TDS (ppm) as shown in the examples below.
1 uS/cm = 0.5 ppm on a 0.5
scale 1 uS/cm = 0.7 ppm on a 0.70 scale (442)
