Total Organic Carbon (TOC)
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is a measure of the total amount of carbon in organic compounds. TOC in source waters comes from the decomposition of natural organic matter, such as microorganisms, as well as synthetic sources such as pesticides or chemical pollutants. It includes both Purgeable Organic Carbon (also known as VOCs, Volatile Organic Carbon) and Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon.
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is an indicative measure of the amount of oxygen that can be consumed by oxidizable compounds in water. It is used to quantify the presence of such oxidizable compounds. Organic compounds are oxidizable, therefore there is usually a correlation between COD and TOC. However, COD can also vary and show higher readings due to the presence of oxidizable inorganic contaminants, such as ammonia or nitrite.

I get readings that are apparently incorrect.
If there are even small bubbles attached to the head of the detector, this can lead to errors in the reading. To avoid this, every time you place the meter in a water sample, shake it lightly to remove all bubbles.
Readings on the same water sample vary greatly and are apparently incorrect.
This is mainly due to bubbles attached to the sensor head at the time of calibration. Recalibrating will likely fix the problem.
Is it waterproof?
The sensor head is waterproof, but not the entire meter body. Just dip the meter head into the water sample. Water should never reach the level of the power/test keys. You can also use the lid as a holder for the water sample.
