Description
The HI97712 is an advanced portable photometer for measuring aluminum in water. This meter offers a superior optical system that uses a reference detector and narrowband interference filters for extremely fast and repeatable measurements.
Due to its large presence in minerals, rocks and clays, aluminum is present in almost all natural water as a soluble salt, colloid or insoluble compound. These forms of aluminum can also appear in treated water and wastewater due to their use during coagulation processes. When concentrations are higher than 0.2 mg/L, the water becomes coloured, but does not cause any significant effect on human health.
The HI97712 uses an adaptation of the Aluminon Method according to the Standard Methods for the Examination of Drinking Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition, to measure aluminum concentrations up to 1.00 mg/L (ppm). When the standard aluminon reagent is added to samples containing aluminum, the sample turns reddish; The higher the concentration, the deeper the color. The associated color change is analyzed colorimetrically according to Lambert-Beer’s Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color and the radiation emitted depends on the concentration. For aluminum determination, a narrowband interference filter at 525 nm allows only green light to be emitted and passed through the sample cuvette. As the color change of the reacted sample increases, so does the absorbance of the specific wavelength of light, while the transmittance decreases.
This innovative optical system offers superior performance in accuracy, repeatability and time required to make a measurement. This compact, waterproof meter has a tutorial mode that guides the user graphically, step-by-step, to perform a measurement. The compact design fits comfortably in the hand for use in the field or on a bench for use in a laboratory.
