Description
An electroconductivity meter, also known as a conductivity meter or electrical conductivity meter, is an instrument used to measure the ability of a liquid to conduct an electric current. Electrical conductivity is due to the presence of ions in the liquid, such as dissolved salts, acids, bases, or other substances that can carry electrical charges.
These meters are common in various fields, such as industry, agriculture, chemistry, geology, and scientific research. They are used to measure the concentration of salts in aqueous solutions, control water quality, supervise industrial processes, evaluate soil salinity, among other uses.
The operation of an electrical conductivity meter involves measuring the electrical resistance between two electrodes immersed in the liquid. The higher the concentration of ions in the liquid, the lower the electrical resistance, resulting in higher conductivity.
Some conductivity meters are portable, and others are more sophisticated devices used in industrial or laboratory applications. These meters are often calibrated with reference solutions of known conductivity to ensure accurate measurements.
Importantly, the unit of measurement for electrical conductivity is usually the Siemens per meter (S/m) or microsiemens per centimeter (μS/cm), although it is sometimes also expressed in other units as decisiemens per meter (dS/m) or millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm), depending on local preferences and specific applications.
