Description
An ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) meter is a device used to measure the oxidation or reduction potential in a solution. The ORP meter uses a platinum or gold electrode to measure the potential difference between the test solution and a reference electrode. The ORP potential indicates the ability of a solution to oxidize or reduce substances. A positive ORP value indicates an oxidation potential, which means that the solution has an ability to accept electrons and oxidize other substances. A negative ORP value indicates a reduction potential, meaning that the solution has an ability to donate electrons and reduce other substances.
ORP meters typically have a reading scale ranging from -1000 mV (milliVolts) to +1000 mV. Higher values indicate a greater oxidation capacity, while lower values indicate a greater reduction capacity.
It is important to note that the ORP meter only provides a measure of the redox potential of a solution and does not indicate the specific presence or concentration of a substance. Therefore, additional testing and analysis is necessary to determine the composition and concentration of the chemical species present in the solution.
