The HI97717 is an advanced portable photometer for measuring phosphate in water. This meter offers a superior optical system that uses a reference detector and narrowband interference filters for extremely fast and repeatable measurements.
Phosphates are found in many products that we use on a daily basis. Most people don’t realize that phosphates are used to improve the taste and acidity of cola drinks, as a buffering agent to control the pH of antifreeze, and to delay the darkening of cut potatoes used for potato chips. Phosphates are also used in detergents and cleaning fluids for their ability to soften water and remove dirt deposits.
Phosphates are an important fertilizer used in agriculture to improve the growth and development of plant roots. However, high concentrations of phosphates in agricultural runoff can cause environmental pollution and are a major cause of eutrophication. Local laws govern phosphate use and discharge levels in streams.
The HI97717 uses an adaptation of the amino acid method to measure phosphate concentrations up to 30.0 mg/L (ppm). When the reagent is added to phosphate-containing samples, the sample turns blue; The higher the concentration, the deeper the color. The associated color change is analyzed colorimetrically according to Lambert-Beer’s Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color and the radiation emitted depends on the concentration. For high phosphate levels, a narrowband interference filter at 525 nm allows the silicon photodetector to detect only blue-green light and omits the rest of the visible light emitted by the LED lamp. As the color change of the reacted sample increases, so does the absorbance of the specific wavelength of light, while the transmittance decreases.

LED light sources offer superior performance compared to tungsten lamps. LEDs have a much higher luminous efficiency, providing more light while using less energy. They also produce little heat, which could otherwise affect electronic stability.

Increased Light Output:
A focusing lens collects all the light that comes out of the bucket, eliminating errors due to imperfections and scratches that may be present in the glass. The use of convex lenses reduces the need to index trays.
